Mavericks strike first in Game 1 of WMBL Final over Mils

The Medicine Hat Mavericks drew first blood in Game 1 of the Western Major Baseball League Final as they scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to double up the visiting Melville Millionaires 6-3 on Monday night.

The two teams exchanged runs in the first 3 innings to give the hometown Mavs a 2-1 lead. The Mavs would then explode for 3 runs in the 5th to give them a commanding 5-1 lead. The Mils though wouldn't back down though as they scored 2 in the Top of 6th that included the red hot Matt Helms getting his league leading 16th hit of the postseason to cut the lead to 5-3 but thats all the Mils would get.

Mils starter Mitchell Bro got the start on the mound going only 3 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits, as he walked 2 & struck out 1 as he took the loss.

The Mils are in the same position as they were in, in the first 2 series' as they dropped the first game in both the Regina and Swift Current series.

The two teams go right back at it tonight (Tues) for Game 2, 7:05 at Jeffries Park, before returning back for Games 3 & if necessary Game 4 tomorrow and Thursday at Pirie Field.
